Roundtable discussion on the challenges of infections and antimicrobial resistance
In this podcast, Prof. Florian Wagenlehner, Dr. Zafer Tandoğdu, and Dr. Anne Ackerman talk about the challenges of infections in urology, specifically related to antimicrobial resistance.
Factors such as ageing population and over-medicalisation are identified as possible causes of the increase in mortality rates for urosepsis and other antimicrobial-resistant infections.
The importance of appropriate microbiological workup and non-antibiotic treatments to better support patients is discussed, as well as pitfalls in diagnosing infections in the elderly population, such as the prevalence of bacteriuria. The fear of bad outcomes for patients drives the overuse of antibiotics, despite the risk of antimicrobial resistance.
Prof. Dr. Florian Wagenlehner (DE) is member of the EAU Guidelines panel on Urological Infections, Dr. Z. Tandoğdu (GB) is chair of the EAU Section of Infections in Urology, and Dr. Anna Ackerman (US) is a urologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, California.
