Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has become a mainstay in modern surgical management. The aims of ERAS are optimisation and standardisation of perioperative management to reduce the risk of complications, and promote faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. These also apply to kidney cancer surgery.
The key elements of ERAS include increasing the use of minimally-invasive surgical approaches and standardised clinical pathways starting before surgery and continuing through recovery, as well as a proactive approach to increasing patient mobilisation and return to oral nutrition.
