What treatment can be recommended in patients with local recurrence after partial nephrectomy
Partial nephrectomy is the recommended treatment of patients with localised nonmetastatic stage-T1 renal cell carcinoma. However, a risk for local recurrence remains due to incomplete surgery despite the surgical technique used.

This risk may be due to surgical skills but will be aggravated by an aggressive tumour growth and microvascular invasion. It may also be due to multifocality. The preferred therapeutic option for local recurrence is yet to be defined.
Treatment alternatives are repeat partial nephrectomy, and ablative treatments while the most effective procedure might be complete nephrectomy. The goal is complete removal of the recurrent disease with negative margins and a durable tumour control.
